Isobelle Kawai Vincent – Sumi-e Painting Workshops

About the Tutor Isabelle, a practicing artist and an experienced art teacher, has taught students from the age of 2 years to adults. She resided in Japan for 5 years to study Japanese Sumi-e painting, calligraphy and culture. However, as a second generation Japanese Australian, she fuses both her cultures into her art and workshops.

What Is Sumi-e? Sumi-e (Ink Painting) is a traditional Japanese art form utilizing just ink, paper, and water. One of the main features of ink painting is the beauty that can be found in negative spaces (white/blank spaces), which can signify airiness and light while capturing the audience's imagination. The objective of Sumi-e is not to recreate the subject to look perfectly like the original, but to capture its essence or the spirit of the subject.

Workshop Description The workshops are for beginners or intermediate and all art materials, including ink stones, ink sticks, brushes and paper, are supplied and imported from Japan. You will learn how to use a Japanese ink stone to make ink with an ink stick and basic traditional brush techniques to create and express shades, three-dimensional form and perspective. These traditional Japanese techniques and processes can be applied to Australian flora, such as bottle brushes, orchids and grasses.

There is a limited supply of mini Japanese scrolls available to purchase at $20 each to present and hang your artwork.

It is recommended to bring an apron or art smock as the ink will stain clothes.
